Let’s talk about those New Year’s resolutions. We’ve all been there: setting ambitious New Year’s resolutions, with the best of intentions only to watch them fizzle out by February. Ugh, right? If I had a dollar for every time I’ve fallen short, I’d be sipping margaritas on a beach somewhere.
This year, let’s do things differently. Let’s actually make those resolutions stick. And the secret? It’s not about sheer willpower or some magical motivation potion. It’s about habits.
In all honesty, I think I’ve had little success with resolutions. I have, however cultivated a few great habits that has been more than life changing.

WHY HABITS MATTER
Habits are the building blocks of our lives. They’re the little things we do every day that shape our routines, our thoughts, and ultimately, our outcomes. Good habits lead to good results. Bad habits? Well, you get the picture.
I’ve tried the whole gym-diet-self-care routine, but I always get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of change. Sound familiar?
But here’s the thing: small, consistent changes can lead to big results. And that’s where habits come in.
BREAKING THE CYCLE
So, how do we break bad habits and form good ones? Let’s dive in:
Identify Your Triggers:
What sets off your bad habits? Is it boredom, stress, or a lack of structure?
Once you know your triggers, you can start to address them. For example, if you tend to mindlessly snack when you’re bored, find a new hobby or activity to keep your mind and hands busy.
Replace Bad Habits with Good Ones:
Don’t just stop a bad habit; replace it with a good one. If you want to cut back on sugary drinks, swap them for water or herbal tea.
Start small and build momentum. Small, consistent changes are more sustainable than drastic ones. It also helps if you educate yourself on the benefits of cultivating good habits. Here are seven of my favorite books to recommend for you to get started.
- The Power of Discipline by Daniel Walter
- Atomic Habits by James Clear
- The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest
- Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins
- Winning The War In Your Mind by Craig Groeschel
- Stop Overthinking by Nick Trenton and Russell Newton
- The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins
PRACTICE SELF-COMPASSION:
We’re all human, and we all slip up sometimes. Don’t beat yourself up if you fall off the wagon.
Remember, progress, not perfection. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small.
This can be said for just about anything you’re working on. Nothing is accomplished in a day, it takes time and dedication, but we are also flawed and sometimes things happen that are way out of our control so be kind to yourself.
PRIORITIZE SELF-CARE:
When we’re well-rested, nourished, and mentally healthy, we’re better equipped to handle challenges and stick to our goals.
Make time for activities that you enjoy and that help you relax. Whether it’s yoga, meditation, or simply taking a long bath, self-care is essential. I do hot yoga twice a week. Matter of fact, I joined my gym because they have this class and it’s the best decision I’ve made this year.
A FINAL THOUGHT
Changing habits isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. By taking small steps and practicing self-compassion, you can create lasting change and achieve your goals.
